Abstrakt

This article examines the persistence and transformation of the myth of the 'Greek miracle' in literary representations of Athens within Polish and French literatures of the second half of the twentieth century. Drawing on a corpus of essays and travel narratives, the study highlights the tension between the idealization of classical Greece – perceived as the cradle of European culture – and the rediscovery of a living, multifaceted, and contemporary Greece. Using a geocritical approach, it explores the symbolic dimension of the site – the Acropolis as a focal point of Western imagination – in relation to its tangible, historical, and social realities. While fascination with classical perfection endures, several authors, particularly Polish ones, question the very nature of this veneration for the past and the effects of a Eurocentric gaze often marked by condescension or rigidity. The gradual shift from sacralized admiration to a more critical and dialogic perception signals a redefinition of the very concept of the 'Greek miracle', now seen not as an immutable ideal but as a space of exchange between memory, otherness, and cultural identity.
