Abstract
The article is an interpretation of two short stories by Bolesław Prus: 'Podwójny człowiek' and 'Pan Wesołowski i jego kij'. Both texts are read from the perspective of an experiment involving personality changes in older people. The analysis covers the motives behind such behavior, its interpersonal mechanisms, and its final effects. The conclusion emphasizes the connection between criticism of this type of behavior and the struggle between ideological factions in the second half of the 19th century.
